Desab Water Project

Imagine having to walk two hours to get your WATER.

desab waterWater is essential to life. Without drinking water we can only survive about three days. We need it to grow, wash, and cook our food. In the US, we use water all day long and think nothing of it.

Imagine if there was no running water in your house, or even in the town where you live. Every single day you have to walk over an hour each way and carry as many jugs as you can back to your house, just to survive.

This is the life for thousands of people in a mountainous desert region of Haiti known as Desab. The nearest stream is a two-mile hike over rugged terrain. Getting water is a major component of their lives. Some children can’t go to school because they have to get water for their families. The village of Desab consists of a medical clinic, a school, and a bakery, all with no water. The dry season in this area lasts for months and it is common to go from November to March without a drop of rain.  A small stream two miles away makes life possible, but it is a struggle.

Solar Energy Education and Demonstration (SEED) is a 501c-3 non-profit organization that traveled to Desab in 2017 to install a solar electric system on the medical clinic, which today provides power for vaccine refrigerators and lights. During our visit to install that system, we immediately recognized the devastating effect that the lack of a good clean water supply has on the community.  Can you imagine a school without water for the children to drink when it’s over 100 degrees? Or a medical clinic without water for washing wounds? We immediately started planning our next mission, to pump water from the stream two miles away to the center of the village.

We need your help to make this happen. This system will provide year-round clean water for the school, medical clinic, and for thousands of people living in the area who currently have to walk great distances and carry all their water. They will be able to fill up their jugs right in the

village. We estimate there will be enough water for everyone in the area including some for irrigation during the dry season – something that has been unimaginable until now.

Dec 2018 UPDATE:
We are heading to Desab in January do site analysis, map the planned location of the pipe, measure the length of pipe required, and discuss with the local people the project to dig the trench for the pipe. This will help us determine the overall cost of the project. Stay tuned and check our Facebook page for regular updates and photos from the trip. All donations will go directly to this project with no administration fees.

SEED is a small non-profit run by volunteers.  100% of donations go directly to our projects.
