The Fanmi Lasante medical clinic in Desab, Haiti serves more than 10,000 people in the area. Many people have to walk very far to reach the clinic, which only has the resources to be open one day per week. The medical needs in this community are dire. The people there face malnutrition, bacterial and parasitic infections, injuries, illnesses, and more.
There is no electricity in the village or at the clinic. The Solar SEED Project visited the clinic in March 2017 to install a solar energy system for the clinic. Electricity is now being used to provide lighting to examine patients and to run refrigerator to keep vital medicines from spoiling. This was all made possible by donations made to the Solar SEED Project.
On our trip to install the solar energy system, we really bonded with the community and saw so many more things we could do to help them further. We plan to return to Desab to continue bring solar energy to the village for the following puposes
- Bringing water to the village with a solar water pump. Currently people have to walk about an hour for water.
- A small solar energy system in the dorm that is for volunteers. The system will just make enough power to have a light and phone charging station in the dorm
- A small electric system in the school for lights
- Helping a few people have a solar light in their houses
The clinic currently only has the resources to be open one day per week, but the energy system we installed will provide enough electricity to keep the refrigerator running continuously, which will enable the clinic to be open for more than one day a week, resulting in more patients being seen and treated.
All donations will go directly to these projects in Desab. All administration on this project is done by volunteer.
We’re working closely with Stone by Stone, another non-profit organization based in New York State. Stone by Stone helps run the clinic throughout the year.
In keeping with the mission of the Solar SEED Project, there is an educational element to all our projects. Now that the system is installed on the medical clinic, we are working closely with people who live there, to teach them how the system works and to keep an eye on it. We also made big posters that are mounted on the wall explaining how it works. It is our hope that the people of Desab will learn how solar energy can help them more.
Please consider contributing to our work in Desab. This directly benefits people who need immediate help.
