January 2019 trip to Haiti for two projects

In January 2019, SEED director Gary Beckwith, along with solar technician Joe Kowalik, will travel to two sites in Haiti to work on humanitarian projects:

  • First we will visit the Duchity Vocational School to upgrade the existing solar energy system that provides electricity for the school. It was back in 2012 that SEED director Gary Beckwith first installed a solar system when the school was first being built. Now that the school is fully operational with students, classes, computers, and more electricity needs, the energy system needs an upgrade. Gary and Joe will visit the school and triple the size of the solar array from 300 watts to over 900 watts. We will also install brand new batteries, replace undersized wires, and install monitoring equipment. This project is conducted jointly between SEED and the Vermont Haiti Project.
  • Then we will go back to Desab and continue our work on the Desab Water Project. Desab is a small rural community that SEED visited in 2017 to install a solar energy system on a medical clinic. Now we are going back to work on our plan to bring water to the community. Currently people have to walk two hours every day and carry all their water. On this trip we will be surveying the site where we plan to bury a pipe from a stream that is over a mile away, to the village. We will take precise measurements of how long the pipe will be, and we will map out the proposed location of the pipe using a GPS. For more information see the Desab Water Project page.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for photos and updates while we are on the trip, which is from January 3rd to January 11th.

To support either of these projects please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to SEED.
